Geomagnetic Storm K Index

NOAA Issues K-Index Alerts for Geomagnetic Storm Activity

What are K-Index Alerts?

WEB K-index Alerts are issued when the NOAA estimated Kp-indices reach 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9. The K-index quantifies disturbances in the horizontal component of Earth's magnetic field.

Geomagnetic Storm Activity

The Kp-index is the global geomagnetic activity index that is based on 3-hour measurements from ground-based magnetometers around the world. It measures the disturbance level caused by solar wind interactions with Earth's magnetic field. Geomagnetic storms occur when the Kp-index reaches 5 or higher.

Significance of K-Index Alerts

These alerts provide critical information for industries and individuals that are affected by geomagnetic activity, such as power grids, satellite communications, and aviation. For example, a Kp-index of 8 or 9 can cause disruptions to high-frequency radio communications and navigation systems.
